THE 11th ANNIVERSARY
11 Years after the folks at SunsetSF founded the SF FUNK FESTIVAL, they're back with a run of shows to move your hearts, minds and feet. The Festival founded to celebrate the FUNK in music, art and film presents another lineup of legendary figures and future stars. As always SF Funk provides a wide array of funky formats to appeal to fans of live music, djs, turntablism, disco, boogie, worldfunk and soul... so much soul.
The Festival kicks off on Saturday November 3 with perhaps THE most important musicians in the development of funk music, all under one roof. Legendary trombonist, composer and arranger FRED WESLEY will lead his NEW JB's into Mezzanine joined by former band-mates "the funky drummers" CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD and JABO STARKS and bassist FRED THOMAS. This is the first appearance by the rhythm section from the classic James Brown/JB's years in San Francisco in decades, fronted by ÒFred FredÓ the man who wrote and arranged much of the music for not only Brown, but Parliament-Funkdelic, and Bootsy's Rubber Band as well. Fred's New JB's band is a group of handpicked ringers with whom he tours extensively, providing the glue for this historic evening. To make the night even more special, beloved Bay Area hip hop/funk MC LYRICS BORN will open the show with his own impressive live funk band, host the night, and potentially sit in with the JB's. This is a once-in a lifetime show that SFFUNK has been trying to put together for literally 10 years.
That Monday, the 5th, the celebration of the JB's will continue at the city's hottest funk DJ night, "M.O.M." aka "Motown on Mondays". Run by local heroes Gordo Cabeza, Timoteo and Phleck, this edition will feature a trubute to the JB's and the James Brown family. DJ's will explore the music of Brown, the JB's Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bobby Byrd, Hank Ballard and all of the many remixes, samples, and imitators. Tickets can only be purchased at the door and this event sells out weekly. Get there early, doors at 9.
Week two of SF Funk celebrates the sights and sounds of one of the funk's birthplaces, New Orleans. On Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9, Grammy award winning REBIRTH BRASS BAND will play two huge nights at Mezzanine, joined by the CALIFORNIA HONEYDROPS & DJ HARRY DUNCAN on Friday and SUBHARMONIC & MOTION POTION on Saturday. Rebirth is a New Orleans institution and one of the great ambassadors of New Orleans funk, and brass band swing fore more than two decades. Rebirth's arrangements are tighter than the eye of a needle, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Their ability to use traditional brass band instrumentation as a vehicle for 'brasstardizations' of modern funk, r&b and hip hop has elevated them above their peers, genre and city into a class all by themselves. Rebirth has played for SunsetSF more than 50 times in the past 10 years and the last 25 shows have sold out in advance. We recommend you purchase early.
Also on Friday, November 9th we welcome two legendary DJs, SPINNA & RICH MEDINA to Mighty as they play an entire night focused on the music of JAMES BROWN and FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI. Spinna and Medina have been two of the most prolific producers of reconstructed dancefloor funk. Spinna alone has made huge strides in gaining new recognition for soul artists through his seminal remix and cover compillations of Stevie Wonder and the offshot "Wonderful" parties. To have him and Rich Medina in SF playing both the Godfather and Fela is a huge treat.
Week three of SF Funk 2012 is intense, eclectic and electric, featuring rising stars bringing funk into the future. We begin with the legendary long-running Mission funk night AFROLICIOUS. Thursday, November 15 will feature DC nufunk superstar ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE in the first SF appearance since putting out their latest full-length release "Jack of All Trades". Rusty Belicek will be on-hand to play a set of his patented go-go-infused funky break-beat music. There are few producers in the Untied States who have released as consistent quality and quantity of funk records as AGFA. This is a show you should not miss.
On Friday, November 16 we present our annual "House Party: DJ Night" featuring three headliners who are famed for their reinvention of funk in a DJ context. PEANUT BUTTER WOLF is one of the nation's top turntablists, and funky beat-diggers. These skills have allowed him to build a veritable empire around his seminal STONESTHROW label, which has launched the careers of a bevy of stars including DAM FUNK & MAYER HAWTHORNE. If Stonesthrow had a clone on the East Coast it would be Fort Knox Recordings a label built around the work of Washington DC band/producers FORT KNOX 5. FK5's JON H. & THUNDERBALL will play their patented 4-turntable audio-visual DJ set. ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE will play their second set of the week. SFFUNk founder MOtiON POtION will be on the scene as well and the M.O.M. "Motown on Mondays" DJ's TIMOTEO, GORDO CABEZA and PHLECK will host the back room.
On Saturday, November 17, SF Funk presents two unique shows featuring a bevy of hot new funk talent. At the Independent, we present a night of Gypsy Funk with an exclusive appearance by one of the Bay Area's rising stars DIEGO's UMBRELLA. D.U. is riding high on the 2012 release of their full-length hit record "Proper Cowboy".
Due to some strange circumstances, Funk fest 2012 will actually conclude in 2013. That's because our show with the BUDOS BAND & AFROLICIOUS (live) has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 19. 2013. If you have purchased tickets to 11.17 they will be honored but if the new date doesn't work and oyu need a refund, please contact customersupport@ticketfly.com and they will take care of it. The BUDOS BAND come from the same Brooklyn deep funk soul revival community that has given us Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Antibalas, & Lee Fields, but unlike some of their peers, the Budos are in no way a polished throwback to the suit-wearing 60's. If anything, their energy and attitude is more "punk" than "funk" and their shows tend to get quite rowdy (although usually more-so onstage than off). The Budos will be joined by one of San Francisco's rising stars, AFROLICIOUS. The house band for the seminal Thursday Mission dance night has become a force in its own right. Signed to Thievery Corp's ESL Records they have had a summer to remember, playing legendary venues like Red Rocks & Electric Forest and nearly stole the show from the Budos at SFFF 2011. Tickets for this show will most assuredly sell out in advance so we recommend you purchase asap.
